Description

Disperse Red 17, also known as C.I. Disperse Red 17 or 1-((4-Nitrophenyl)azo)-2-naphthol, is a synthetic azo dye commonly used in haircare products, particularly for temporary hair coloration. This vibrant red pigment is prized for its ability to impart a rich, warm hue to hair without permanent alteration of the hair shaft.

The dye molecule consists of a nitrophenyl group linked to a naphthol structure via an azo bond, which contributes to its color properties. Disperse Red 17 is characterized by its low water solubility and high affinity for hydrophobic surfaces, allowing it to adhere effectively to the hair cuticle. This attribute enables the dye to withstand several washes before gradually fading.
