DIISONONYL PHTHALATE
Description
Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is a synthetic chemical compound belonging to the phthalate ester family. It is a colorless, oily liquid with low volatility and high molecular weight. DINP is primarily used as a plasticizer in various consumer products, including some cosmetics and personal care items.
In skincare formulations, DINP functions as a solvent and emollient, helping to improve product texture and spreadability. It can enhance the flexibility and durability of cosmetic films, potentially increasing the longevity of makeup and other topical products. DINP may also contribute to the moisturizing properties of certain formulations.
However, the use of DINP in cosmetics has become controversial due to concerns about potential endocrine-disrupting effects and other health risks associated with phthalates. As a result, many regulatory bodies have imposed restrictions on its use in personal care products, particularly those intended for children or sensitive skin areas.
Alternative plasticizers and emollients are increasingly being used in place of DINP in skincare formulations. When present in products, DINP is typically listed as an ingredient under its full chemical name or as "diisononyl phthalate" on product labels.
