DIHYDROXYACETIC ACID
Description
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), often referred to as dihydroxyacetic acid, is a key ingredient in self-tanning products. This colorless sugar molecule interacts with amino acids in the skin's surface to produce a brownish pigment called melanoidins, resulting in a tanned appearance without UV exposure. DHA is typically derived from plant sources such as sugar beets or sugar cane through fermentation processes.
The efficacy of DHA in self-tanning formulations ranges from 3% to 10%, with higher concentrations producing darker results. The tan development begins within 2-3 hours of application and reaches its peak color within 24-72 hours. The effect generally lasts 5-7 days as the treated skin cells naturally exfoliate.
DHA is FDA-approved for external application and is considered safe for most skin types. However, it may cause temporary dryness or minor irritation in some individuals. It's important to note that DHA does not provide UV protection, so additional sunscreen is necessary when exposed to sunlight. Recent research has explored DHA's potential antioxidant properties and its use in medical applications for conditions like vitiligo, although further studies are needed to confirm these benefits.
