DIGLYCERIN
Description
Diglycerin is a potent humectant and emollient widely used in skincare formulations. This clear, viscous liquid is a glycerin dimer, consisting of two glycerin molecules bonded together. Its molecular structure allows it to attract and retain moisture more effectively than standard glycerin, making it an excellent choice for hydrating and moisturizing products.
Diglycerin exhibits superior water-binding properties, helping to maintain skin hydration and improve overall skin barrier function. It has a lower hygroscopicity compared to glycerin, which means it's less likely to draw moisture from the air in low-humidity environments. This characteristic makes it particularly beneficial in leave-on skincare products.
In formulations, diglycerin enhances texture and spreadability, contributing to a smooth, non-sticky feel. It also acts as a solvent, helping to dissolve and stabilize other ingredients. Diglycerin is non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin types. Its moisturizing effects can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin elasticity.
Typically used at concentrations between 1-5%, diglycerin is compatible with most skincare ingredients and can be found in a wide range of products, including serums, moisturizers, and hair care formulations.
