DICHLOROMETHANE
Description
Dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride, is a volatile organic compound with a controversial history in cosmetic and personal care applications. This colorless, sweet-smelling liquid was once used as a solvent in various haircare and skincare formulations due to its excellent ability to dissolve a wide range of substances. However, its use has been significantly restricted or banned in many countries due to serious health and environmental concerns.
In haircare, dichloromethane was formerly utilized in some hair sprays and as a propellant in aerosol products. For skincare, it found limited use in nail polish removers and as a solvent for certain active ingredients. The compound's rapid evaporation rate made it attractive for quick-drying formulations.
Despite its effectiveness as a solvent, dichloromethane poses significant risks. It is classified as a probable human carcinogen and can cause severe respiratory issues, liver damage, and central nervous system depression with prolonged exposure. Additionally, it contributes to ozone depletion and poses environmental hazards.
Due to these risks, safer alternatives have largely replaced dichloromethane in modern cosmetic formulations. Its use is now heavily regulated, and it is no longer recommended for personal care products in most jurisdictions.
