DICHLORO-M-XYLENOL
Description
DICHLORO-M-XYLENOL, also known as DCMX or 2,4-Dichloro-3,5-xylenol, is a synthetic antimicrobial agent widely used in skincare and personal care products. This chlorinated phenolic compound exhibits broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses, making it an effective preservative and antiseptic ingredient. DCMX functions by disrupting microbial cell membranes, leading to cell death and preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms on the skin and in formulations.
With a chemical structure similar to triclosan, DCMX offers enhanced stability and efficacy at lower concentrations. It is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria and demonstrates good activity in both acidic and alkaline environments. DCMX is commonly incorporated into soaps, cleansers, shampoos, and topical antiseptic products at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5%.
While DCMX is generally considered safe for use in cosmetic and personal care applications, some individuals may experience skin irritation or sensitization. As with many antimicrobial agents, prolonged use or overexposure may potentially contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Formulators should consider the appropriate concentration and combination with other preservatives to ensure product safety and efficacy while minimizing potential adverse effects.
