Diatomaceous Earth
Description
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock composed of fossilized remains of diatoms, microscopic algae with silica cell walls. This fine, off-white powder has gained attention in skincare for its unique properties. DE contains primarily silica, along with trace minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron.
In skincare formulations, DE serves multiple purposes. Its mildly abrasive nature makes it an effective physical exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. The porous structure of DE particles allows it to absorb excess oils and impurities from the skin, making it beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin types.
DE's high silica content may contribute to collagen production, potentially improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines. Its absorbent properties also make it useful in mattifying products and as an anti-caking agent in powdered cosmetics.
However, it's crucial to use only food-grade or cosmetic-grade DE in skincare, as industrial grades can be harmful. The particle size and concentration must be carefully controlled to ensure gentle exfoliation without causing micro-tears in the skin. When formulated correctly, DE can be a versatile and effective ingredient in various skincare products.
