DIAMMONIUM PHOSPHATE
Description
Diammonium phosphate (DAP) is a versatile inorganic compound with the chemical formula (NH4)2HPO4. In skincare formulations, it serves multiple functions, primarily as a pH adjuster and buffering agent. DAP helps maintain the stability of products by regulating acidity levels, which is crucial for preserving the efficacy of active ingredients and ensuring product safety.
As a source of phosphorus and nitrogen, DAP can contribute to cellular energy production and protein synthesis in the skin. It may also have mild exfoliating properties, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion. In some formulations, DAP acts as a chelating agent, binding to metal ions that could otherwise destabilize the product or irritate the skin.
The ingredient is generally considered safe for cosmetic use when properly formulated. However, it's important to note that high concentrations may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. DAP is water-soluble and typically used in small amounts in skincare products such as cleansers, toners, and serums. Its ability to regulate pH makes it particularly useful in formulations containing acids or other pH-sensitive ingredients, helping to optimize their performance while minimizing potential skin irritation.
