DEDM HYDANTOIN
Description
DEDM Hydantoin, also known as 1,3-Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-5-methyl-5-azaniumylhexahydropyrimidine-2,4,6-trione, is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient primarily used as a preservative in skincare and personal care products. This synthetic compound belongs to the hydantoin family and exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts, and molds.
DEDM Hydantoin is effective at low concentrations, typically ranging from 0.1% to 0.3% in formulations. It functions optimally in a pH range of 3 to 9, making it versatile for various product types. The ingredient is particularly valuable in emulsions, lotions, and creams due to its oil-soluble nature, which allows it to protect the water phase from microbial contamination.
In addition to its preservative properties, DEDM Hydantoin demonstrates mild antistatic and conditioning effects, enhancing the overall performance of hair care products. It is compatible with most cosmetic ingredients and remains stable in the presence of other preservatives, enabling formulators to create robust preservation systems.
While generally considered safe for use in cosmetics, some individuals may experience skin sensitization. As with any preservative, patch testing is recommended for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions.
