Cyclotetrasiloxane

Description

Cyclotetrasiloxane, also known as D4 siloxane, is a volatile silicone compound widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations. This colorless, odorless liquid possesses a unique molecular structure consisting of four silicon-oxygen units arranged in a cyclic formation. Its low surface tension and excellent spreading properties make it a valuable ingredient in skincare and haircare products.

Cyclotetrasiloxane functions primarily as an emollient and carrier, providing a silky, smooth texture to formulations. It evaporates quickly upon application, leaving behind a non-greasy feel on the skin or hair. This rapid evaporation also aids in the dispersion of other active ingredients. In addition to its textural benefits, cyclotetrasiloxane acts as a mild water repellent, offering temporary protection to the skin barrier.

However, concerns have been raised about its potential environmental impact and bioaccumulation. Some regulatory bodies have placed restrictions on its use in wash-off products. As a result, many formulators are exploring alternative silicone-based or silicone-free options. When used in leave-on products, cyclotetrasiloxane is generally considered safe at current concentration levels, but ongoing research continues to evaluate its long-term effects.
