Cyclomethicone

Description

Cyclomethicone is a versatile silicone-based compound widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This clear, odorless fluid is composed of cyclic siloxanes, primarily cyclopentasiloxane and cyclotetrasiloxane. Its low surface tension and ability to evaporate quickly make it an excellent carrier for other ingredients and contribute to a smooth, silky feel on the skin.

In skincare products, cyclomethicone functions as an emollient and conditioning agent. It creates a temporary barrier on the skin, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and maintain hydration. The ingredient's light, non-greasy texture allows for easy spreading and quick absorption, making it ideal for use in serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens.

Cyclomethicone also acts as a volatile silicone, meaning it evaporates from the skin's surface over time. This property makes it useful in hair care products, where it can provide temporary shine and smoothness without buildup. While generally considered safe for topical use, some environmental concerns have been raised regarding the bioaccumulation of certain cyclic siloxanes. As a result, some formulators are exploring alternative ingredients or using more environmentally-friendly silicone derivatives in newer product developments.
