CRYSTALLINS

Description

Crystallins are a family of structural proteins primarily found in the lens of the eye, but recent research has uncovered their potential in skincare applications. These proteins are known for their exceptional water-retention properties and ability to maintain transparency in biological tissues. In skincare formulations, crystallins are utilized for their hydrating and anti-aging effects.

The most commonly used crystallin in skincare is alpha-crystallin, which functions as a molecular chaperone. This protein helps prevent the aggregation of other proteins, potentially reducing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Beta-crystallin, another member of the family, has shown promise in protecting skin cells from oxidative stress and UV damage.

Crystallins are typically derived from plant or biotechnology sources to ensure compatibility with human skin. When incorporated into skincare products, they can improve skin hydration, enhance elasticity, and provide a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Their ability to interact with other proteins in the skin may also contribute to improved overall skin health and appearance.
