COCHINEAL

Description

Cochineal is a natural red dye derived from the crushed bodies of female Dactylopius coccus, a scale insect native to tropical and subtropical America. This vibrant pigment has been used for centuries in textiles, cosmetics, and food coloring. In skincare and cosmetic formulations, cochineal extract, also known as carmine or Natural Red 4, is prized for its intense, long-lasting color and stability.

The primary component of cochineal is carminic acid, which makes up about 17-24% of the dried insect's weight. This compound is responsible for the dye's distinctive red hue. Cochineal extract is water-soluble and exhibits excellent light and heat stability, making it suitable for a wide range of skincare and cosmetic applications.

In skincare, cochineal is primarily used as a colorant in lip products, blushes, and other color cosmetics. It is generally considered safe for topical use, though some individuals may experience allergic reactions. Formulators should be aware that cochineal is not vegan-friendly and must be clearly labeled due to potential allergenicity. When used appropriately, cochineal can provide vibrant, natural color to skincare and cosmetic products without the need for synthetic dyes.
