COAL TAR

Description

Coal tar is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other compounds derived from the distillation of coal. This dark, viscous substance has been used in dermatology for over a century due to its potent anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and keratolytic properties. Coal tar is particularly effective in treating chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis.

The active components in coal tar, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, work by slowing down skin cell growth and reducing inflammation. This helps to alleviate symptoms like scaling, itching, and redness. Coal tar also demonstrates antimicrobial effects, which can be beneficial in managing secondary infections associated with skin disorders.

Typically, coal tar is incorporated into topical formulations at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5%, depending on the specific condition being treated. While generally considered safe when used as directed, coal tar can increase photosensitivity and may cause skin irritation in some individuals. Long-term use should be monitored due to potential carcinogenic concerns, although epidemiological studies have shown minimal risk when used in therapeutic concentrations. Despite the development of newer treatments, coal tar remains a valuable option in dermatological therapy due to its efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
