CINOXATE
Description
Cinoxate is a potent UV filter commonly used in sunscreen formulations and other photoprotective skincare products. This synthetic compound belongs to the cinnamate family of organic substances and functions as an effective UVB absorber. With a chemical structure of 2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxycinnamate, cinoxate offers broad-spectrum protection against harmful solar radiation.
The ingredient works by absorbing UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn and DNA damage in skin cells. Cinoxate's molecular structure allows it to convert absorbed UV energy into harmless heat, thus preventing damage to the skin. It is particularly effective in the UVB range of 280-320 nm.
Cinoxate is oil-soluble, making it compatible with various cosmetic formulations, including lotions, creams, and sprays. Its stability in different pH environments and resistance to photodegradation contribute to its efficacy in sunscreen products. Typically used at concentrations between 1-3%, cinoxate can be combined with other UV filters for enhanced protection.
While generally considered safe for topical use, some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. As with all sunscreen ingredients, proper application and reapplication are crucial for optimal protection.
