CI 75100
Description
CI 75100, also known as Yellow 5 Lake or Tartrazine Lake, is a synthetic colorant widely used in cosmetics and skincare products. This water-soluble dye is derived from coal tar and belongs to the azo dye family. It imparts a vibrant yellow hue to various formulations, including creams, lotions, and powders.
The ingredient is created by precipitating the water-soluble FD&C Yellow No. 5 onto an insoluble substrate, typically alumina hydrate. This process results in a more stable pigment that is less likely to migrate or bleed in product formulations. CI 75100 is approved for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EU Commission.
While generally considered safe for topical use, some individuals may experience allergic reactions or skin irritation. Those with aspirin sensitivities or asthma may be more susceptible to adverse effects. It's important to note that this colorant is not recommended for use around the eye area in the United States.
Formulators often choose CI 75100 for its excellent color payoff, stability in various pH environments, and compatibility with other cosmetic ingredients. However, due to growing consumer demand for natural alternatives, some brands are exploring plant-based pigments as substitutes.
