CI 40820
Description
CI 40820, also known as Orange 5 or Acid Orange 7, is a synthetic azo dye commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products. This water-soluble colorant imparts a vibrant orange hue to various formulations, including soaps, shampoos, and makeup products.
The chemical structure of CI 40820 consists of a naphthalene ring system coupled with an azo linkage to a benzene ring, resulting in its characteristic orange color. It is typically supplied as a fine powder or granules and can be easily incorporated into both water-based and oil-based formulations.
While CI 40820 is approved for use in cosmetics in many countries, including the European Union and the United States, it is subject to concentration restrictions. In the EU, it is permitted at concentrations up to 0.5% in rinse-off products and 0.1% in leave-on products. Some individuals may experience skin sensitization or allergic reactions to this dye, particularly those with sensitive skin or a history of allergies to azo compounds.
Formulators should be aware of potential stability issues when using CI 40820 in products exposed to light or high temperatures, as these conditions may lead to color fading or changes in the formulation's appearance.
