CI 26100

Description

CI 26100, also known as Solvent Red 23 or Sudan III, is a synthetic azo dye widely used in cosmetic and personal care products. This oil-soluble colorant imparts a vibrant red-orange hue to various formulations, including lipsticks, blushes, and other color cosmetics. Its molecular structure allows for excellent stability in oil-based products, making it a preferred choice for long-lasting, richly pigmented cosmetic applications.

While CI 26100 is approved for use in cosmetics in many countries, including the European Union and the United States, it is subject to concentration restrictions due to potential skin sensitization concerns. Typical usage levels range from 0.1% to 3% in leave-on products, depending on the specific formulation and regulatory guidelines.

This colorant exhibits good light fastness and heat stability, contributing to the longevity of product color. However, it may not be suitable for all skin types, particularly those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to synthetic dyes. Formulators often combine CI 26100 with other colorants to achieve desired shades and effects in cosmetic products. As with all colorants, patch testing is recommended before widespread use to ensure compatibility with individual skin types.
