CI 16230

Description

CI 16230, also known as D&C Red No. 17 or Rhodamine B, is a synthetic red dye used in various cosmetic and personal care products. This colorant belongs to the xanthene dye family and is characterized by its vibrant pink to red hue. CI 16230 is primarily utilized in lip products, such as lipsticks and lip glosses, due to its ability to impart a rich, long-lasting color.

The dye is oil-soluble, making it suitable for incorporation into anhydrous formulations and emulsions. Its molecular structure allows for excellent dispersion in cosmetic bases, resulting in uniform color distribution. CI 16230 exhibits good stability in most cosmetic formulations, resisting degradation from light and heat exposure.

While CI 16230 is approved for use in cosmetics in many countries, it is important to note that regulatory restrictions vary. In the United States, it is permitted only in externally applied cosmetics and drugs, excluding use around the eye area. The European Union has more stringent regulations, allowing its use solely in rinse-off products.

Formulators should be aware of potential skin sensitization in some individuals and adhere to recommended concentration limits to ensure product safety.
