CI 15800
Description
CI 15800, also known as D&C Red No. 11 or Pigment Red 49, is a synthetic red azo dye widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. This water-soluble colorant imparts a vibrant red to pink hue, making it a popular choice for lipsticks, blushes, and other color cosmetics. CI 15800 is approved by the FDA for use in externally applied cosmetics and drugs, as well as in certain food applications.
The chemical structure of CI 15800 consists of a monoazo compound with sulfonic acid groups, which contribute to its solubility and stability in various formulations. Its color intensity and shade can be adjusted by varying the concentration or combining it with other approved colorants.
While generally considered safe for topical use, some individuals may experience sensitivity or allergic reactions to azo dyes. As with any cosmetic ingredient, patch testing is recommended for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergies. It's important to note that CI 15800 is not approved for use in the eye area or in products that may come into contact with mucous membranes.
