CI 12085
Description
CI 12085, also known as Red 36 or Pigment Red 5, is a synthetic organic pigment widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. This vibrant red colorant belongs to the monoazo class of dyes and is characterized by its excellent light fastness and stability across a range of pH levels.
In skincare and cosmetic formulations, CI 12085 is primarily utilized for its strong coloring properties, imparting a rich, warm red hue to products such as lipsticks, blushes, and nail polishes. Its oil-soluble nature makes it particularly suitable for anhydrous formulations and color cosmetics.
While CI 12085 is approved for use in cosmetics in many countries, including the European Union, it is not permitted for use in products that may come into contact with mucous membranes in some regions. This restriction is due to potential concerns about long-term exposure and safety.
Formulators appreciate CI 12085 for its compatibility with other ingredients and its ability to maintain color intensity even when used in small quantities. However, as with all colorants, patch testing is recommended to ensure individual tolerance, particularly for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to cosmetic ingredients.
