CHLOROFORM

Description

Chloroform, a volatile organic compound with the chemical formula CHCl3, has a controversial history in skincare and haircare formulations. This colorless, sweet-smelling liquid was once used as an anesthetic and solvent in various cosmetic products. However, its use has been largely discontinued due to significant safety concerns and regulatory restrictions.

In the past, chloroform was utilized in small quantities as a preservative and solvent in some hair dyes, shampoos, and skin cleansers. Its ability to dissolve a wide range of substances made it an effective ingredient for product formulation. Chloroform also demonstrated some antimicrobial properties, which contributed to its preservative function.

Despite these properties, chloroform has been phased out of cosmetic use due to its potential carcinogenicity and hepatotoxicity. Prolonged exposure or absorption through the skin can lead to serious health risks, including liver and kidney damage. As a result, regulatory bodies worldwide have banned or severely restricted its use in personal care products. Modern formulations now employ safer alternatives for preservation and solvency, prioritizing consumer safety while maintaining product efficacy.
