CHLORHEXIDINE DIGLUCONATE
Description
Chlorhexidine digluconate is a potent, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent widely used in skincare and medical applications. This biguanide compound effectively targets both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as some fungi and viruses. Its mechanism of action involves disrupting microbial cell membranes, leading to cell death and preventing bacterial colonization.
In skincare formulations, chlorhexidine digluconate is primarily utilized for its antiseptic properties, making it valuable in acne treatments, wound care products, and pre-operative skin preparations. It exhibits excellent substantivity, adhering to the skin and providing prolonged antimicrobial activity. Typical concentrations range from 0.05% to 4%, depending on the application.
While highly effective, chlorhexidine digluconate may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. It is incompatible with anionic surfactants and certain preservatives, necessitating careful formulation. The compound is stable over a wide pH range but performs optimally between pH 5.5 and 7.0. Its efficacy can be enhanced by combining it with other antimicrobial agents or skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera or panthenol to mitigate potential irritation.
