CETYL ALCOHOL

Description

Cetyl alcohol, also known as 1-hexadecanol or palmityl alcohol, is a long-chain fatty alcohol derived from coconut oil or palm oil. Despite its name, it is not an irritating ethanol-based alcohol, but rather a waxy, solid substance at room temperature. In skincare formulations, cetyl alcohol serves multiple purposes, primarily as an emollient, emulsifier, and thickening agent.

This ingredient helps stabilize formulations by creating a barrier that prevents water loss, thus improving the product's texture and shelf life. Cetyl alcohol also enhances the skin's ability to retain moisture, contributing to a smoother, softer feel. Its emollient properties make it particularly beneficial in products designed for dry or sensitive skin.

Cetyl alcohol is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for most skin types. It is non-comedogenic, meaning it's unlikely to clog pores. In haircare products, it can improve manageability and add shine. While some individuals with extremely sensitive skin may experience mild irritation, adverse reactions are rare.

Formulators often combine cetyl alcohol with other fatty alcohols like stearyl or cetearyl alcohol to optimize texture and performance in skincare products. Its versatility makes it a common ingredient in creams, lotions, and various cosmetic formulations.
