Description

Cetyl alcohol is a versatile fatty alcohol commonly used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. Despite its name, it is not an irritating or drying alcohol like ethanol, but rather a waxy, emollient substance derived from vegetable sources such as coconut or palm oil. Cetyl alcohol functions primarily as an emulsifier, thickener, and stabilizer in various skincare products.

This ingredient helps create smooth, creamy textures in lotions, creams, and ointments while also improving the stability and shelf life of formulations. Cetyl alcohol has moisturizing properties, forming a light barrier on the skin's surface to prevent water loss and enhance hydration. It is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered non-comedogenic, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores.

In skincare products, cetyl alcohol typically appears in concentrations between 2% and 5%. It is often combined with other fatty alcohols like stearyl or cetearyl alcohol to optimize its emulsifying and texturizing effects.
