Cetrimonium Chloride

Description

Cetrimonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound widely used in personal care products and cosmetic formulations. This cationic surfactant serves multiple functions, primarily as a conditioning agent, preservative, and antistatic ingredient. Its molecular structure consists of a long hydrophobic chain attached to a positively charged nitrogen atom, allowing it to interact effectively with both water and oil-based substances.

In hair care products, Cetrimonium Chloride acts as an excellent detangler and softener, reducing friction between hair strands and improving combability. Its positively charged nature enables it to adhere to negatively charged hair surfaces, providing a smooth, silky feel. In skincare formulations, it functions as an emulsifier and helps stabilize oil-in-water emulsions.

As a preservative, Cetrimonium Chloride exhibits antimicrobial properties, protecting products from bacterial and fungal contamination. Its concentration in cosmetic products typically ranges from 0.1% to 0.25%. While generally considered safe for use in rinse-off products, higher concentrations may cause skin irritation in some individuals. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EU Cosmetics Regulation have established guidelines for its use in various product categories to ensure consumer safety.
