CETEARTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE

Description

Cetrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound widely used in personal care products and cosmetic formulations. This cationic surfactant serves multiple functions, primarily as a conditioning agent, emulsifier, and preservative. Its molecular structure consists of a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a positively charged nitrogen atom, allowing it to interact effectively with negatively charged hair and skin surfaces.

In hair care products, cetrimonium chloride acts as an excellent detangler and static reducer, improving combability and manageability. It forms a thin, protective film on hair strands, enhancing softness and shine without excessive buildup. In skincare formulations, it functions as an emulsifier, helping to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions and improve product texture.

Cetrimonium chloride also exhibits antimicrobial properties, contributing to the preservation of cosmetic products and extending their shelf life. Its efficacy against various microorganisms makes it a valuable ingredient in maintaining product safety and integrity. Typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.25% to 5%, depending on the specific application and formulation requirements. While generally well-tolerated, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation at higher concentrations.
