CETEARETH-55

Description

Ceteareth-55 is a versatile synthetic emulsifier and surfactant widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations. This nonionic compound is derived from the ethoxylation of cetearyl alcohol, resulting in a substance with both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Its high HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) value makes it particularly effective in stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions and enhancing the solubility of various ingredients.

In skincare products, Ceteareth-55 functions as an emollient and thickening agent, contributing to improved texture and spreadability. It also aids in the even distribution of active ingredients throughout formulations. This ingredient is valued for its ability to create stable, long-lasting emulsions without causing irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.

Ceteareth-55 is commonly found in creams, lotions, cleansers, and hair care products. Its molecular structure allows it to act as a penetration enhancer, potentially improving the efficacy of other active ingredients. While generally considered safe for topical use, as with all ethoxylated compounds, there are some concerns about potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of the ethoxylation process. Manufacturers typically employ vacuum stripping to minimize this risk.
