CERAMIDE AS
Description
Ceramides are essential lipid molecules that play a crucial role in maintaining the skin's protective barrier and retaining moisture. These naturally occurring compounds make up approximately 50% of the skin's outer layer, acting as the "mortar" between skin cells to create a waterproof seal. As we age or experience environmental stressors, ceramide levels in the skin can decrease, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity.
In skincare formulations, ceramides are utilized to replenish and support the skin's natural barrier function. They help to prevent transepidermal water loss, improve hydration, and enhance skin elasticity. Ceramides are particularly beneficial for individuals with dry, sensitive, or compromised skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.
There are several types of ceramides used in skincare products, including ceramide 1, 3, and 6-II. These synthetic versions closely mimic the structure of naturally occurring ceramides in the skin. When incorporated into moisturizers, serums, or cleansers, ceramides work synergistically with other skin-identical lipids like cholesterol and fatty acids to restore and maintain optimal skin health.
