Description

Cellulose is a fundamental component in skincare formulations, serving as a versatile and naturally derived ingredient. This polysaccharide, composed of long chains of glucose molecules, is the primary structural element in plant cell walls. In skincare, cellulose acts as a multifunctional agent, providing texture, stability, and enhanced product performance.

As a thickening and stabilizing agent, cellulose helps maintain the consistency and shelf-life of various skincare products. It also functions as an effective absorbent, capable of controlling excess sebum and reducing shine in oil-control formulations. Cellulose derivatives, such as methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, are commonly used as film-formers, creating a protective barrier on the skin's surface.

In exfoliating products, cellulose beads offer a gentle, biodegradable alternative to microplastics. These spherical particles provide mechanical exfoliation without causing micro-tears in the skin. Additionally, nanocrystalline cellulose has gained attention for its potential in advanced skincare applications, including controlled release of active ingredients and improved product penetration.

Cellulose is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered non-comedogenic, making it suitable for a wide range of skincare formulations.
