CASSIA GUM
Description
Cassia gum is a natural polysaccharide derived from the endosperm of Cassia tora and Cassia obtusifolia seeds. This versatile ingredient has gained significant attention in skincare formulations due to its unique properties and benefits. Structurally similar to guar gum, cassia gum is composed of a linear chain of mannose units with galactose side chains, giving it excellent thickening and stabilizing capabilities.
In skincare products, cassia gum functions as a viscosity modifier, emulsion stabilizer, and film-forming agent. It enhances the texture and feel of formulations, providing a smooth and silky sensation on the skin. Cassia gum's ability to form a protective film on the skin's surface helps to reduce transepidermal water loss, promoting hydration and improving skin barrier function.
This ingredient is particularly valuable in hair care formulations, where it imparts conditioning properties and enhances curl definition in textured hair. Cassia gum is also known for its synergistic effects when combined with other gums or polymers, allowing formulators to achieve desired rheological properties with lower overall gum concentrations. Its natural origin and low irritation potential make it suitable for use in a wide range of skincare and cosmetic applications, including sensitive skin formulations.
