CAROTENOIDS
Description
Carotenoids are a class of naturally occurring pigments found in various plants, algae, and some bacteria. These compounds are responsible for the vibrant yellow, orange, and red colors in many fruits and vegetables. In skincare, carotenoids play a crucial role as potent antioxidants, offering protection against free radical damage and oxidative stress.
The most common carotenoids used in skincare formulations include beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and astaxanthin. These substances are known for their ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species, which can lead to premature aging and skin damage. Carotenoids also exhibit photoprotective properties, helping to shield the skin from harmful UV radiation and reducing the risk of sunburn.
Studies have shown that carotenoids can improve skin elasticity, promote collagen synthesis, and enhance overall skin tone and texture. They may also help in reducing inflammation and supporting the skin's natural barrier function. When incorporated into skincare products, carotenoids are typically sourced from plant extracts or synthesized in laboratories to ensure stability and efficacy. Their lipophilic nature allows for easy absorption into the skin, making them effective ingredients in various formulations, including serums, creams, and oils.
