CANDELILLA WAX HYDROCARBONS

Description

Candelilla wax hydrocarbons are a complex mixture of long-chain aliphatic compounds derived from the Candelilla plant (Euphorbia cerifera), native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. This natural wax ingredient is widely used in cosmetic and skincare formulations due to its multifunctional properties. Primarily composed of n-alkanes, esters, and fatty acids, candelilla wax hydrocarbons offer excellent emollient and occlusive characteristics, forming a protective barrier on the skin to reduce transepidermal water loss.

The ingredient imparts a smooth, velvety texture to products while providing stability and structure to emulsions and anhydrous formulations. Its high melting point (68-72°C) contributes to the longevity and heat resistance of cosmetic products. Candelilla wax hydrocarbons are particularly valued for their ability to enhance the spreadability of formulations and improve the payoff of color cosmetics.

In skincare, these hydrocarbons help to soften and condition the skin, making them beneficial in lip balms, moisturizers, and protective creams. They are generally well-tolerated by most skin types and are often used as a vegan alternative to beeswax. The ingredient is FDA-approved for use in food and cosmetics, further attesting to its safety profile.
