CAMPHOR
Description
Camphor is a versatile organic compound derived primarily from the wood of the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). This white, crystalline substance has a strong, penetrating aroma and is known for its cooling and soothing properties on the skin. In skincare formulations, camphor serves multiple purposes, including as an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic agent.
When applied topically, camphor creates a cooling sensation that can help alleviate itching, irritation, and minor pain. Its vasodilatory effects promote increased blood circulation to the skin's surface, potentially enhancing the absorption of other active ingredients. Camphor also exhibits mild antiseptic properties, making it useful in formulations targeting acne-prone skin.
However, camphor should be used judiciously in skincare products due to its potential for irritation, especially at higher concentrations. It's typically incorporated at low percentages (0.1-3%) in formulations such as cooling gels, anti-itch creams, and muscle rubs. Camphor is contraindicated for use on broken skin or around mucous membranes. Despite its benefits, some individuals may experience sensitivity to camphor, necessitating patch testing before widespread use.
