CALCIUM PROPIONATE

Description

Calcium propionate is a widely used preservative in the cosmetic and skincare industry, known for its effectiveness in preventing microbial growth and extending product shelf life. This white, crystalline powder is the calcium salt of propionic acid and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. In skincare formulations, calcium propionate typically functions as an antimicrobial agent, inhibiting the growth of mold and bacteria.

The ingredient's efficacy is particularly notable in products with a pH range of 5-6, making it suitable for a variety of skincare applications. Calcium propionate is often incorporated into moisturizers, creams, and lotions at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5%. Its water-soluble nature allows for easy integration into aqueous-based formulations.

Beyond its preservative properties, calcium propionate may offer mild exfoliating benefits due to its slight keratolytic effect. This can contribute to improved skin texture and tone when used in appropriate concentrations. However, it's important to note that calcium propionate can be sensitizing for some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin. As with any preservative, patch testing is recommended before widespread use in skincare products.
