CALCIUM PARABEN

Description

Calcium paraben is a preservative compound used in cosmetic and personal care products to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life. This ingredient is a calcium salt of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, belonging to the paraben family of preservatives. Calcium paraben exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts, and molds, making it effective in protecting formulations from contamination.

In skincare formulations, calcium paraben is typically used at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.3%. It is particularly useful in water-based products such as lotions, creams, and liquid foundations. The ingredient is stable across a wide pH range and remains effective in both acidic and alkaline environments.

While parabens have faced scrutiny due to concerns about potential endocrine disruption, calcium paraben is considered one of the milder options within this preservative category. It has a lower skin penetration rate compared to other parabens, potentially reducing systemic absorption. However, formulators should be aware of regulatory limits and consumer preferences when incorporating calcium paraben into their products.

As with all preservatives, patch testing is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to cosmetic ingredients.
