BUTYL PABA
Description
Butyl PABA, also known as butyl 4-aminobenzoate, is a synthetic organic compound that has been used as a UV filter in sunscreens and other personal care products. This ingredient belongs to the para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) family and functions as a UVB absorber, helping to protect the skin from harmful solar radiation. Butyl PABA is oil-soluble and has been utilized in various skincare formulations, including sunscreens, moisturizers, and lip balms.
Despite its effectiveness as a UV filter, the use of butyl PABA has declined significantly in recent years due to concerns about its potential adverse effects. Studies have suggested that this ingredient may cause allergic reactions in some individuals and might act as a photosensitizer, potentially increasing the risk of skin damage when exposed to sunlight. Additionally, there are concerns about its potential estrogenic activity and environmental impact.
As a result of these issues, many regulatory bodies, including the European Union, have restricted or banned the use of butyl PABA in cosmetic products. Alternative UV filters with improved safety profiles have largely replaced this ingredient in modern sunscreen formulations.
