BIS-DIMONIUM METHOSULFATE

Description

Bis-dimonium methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium compound widely used in hair care and skincare formulations. This cationic surfactant functions primarily as a conditioning agent and antistatic additive. Its molecular structure consists of two long-chain alkyl groups attached to a nitrogen atom, along with methyl sulfate as the counterion.

In hair care products, bis-dimonium methosulfate helps reduce frizz, improve combability, and enhance overall manageability of hair strands. It forms a thin, protective film on the hair surface, which aids in detangling and provides a smooth feel. In skincare, it acts as an emollient and helps stabilize emulsions.

The ingredient is particularly effective in leave-on treatments and rinse-off conditioners. It exhibits good substantivity to hair and skin, meaning it adheres well to these surfaces even after rinsing. Bis-dimonium methosulfate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in cosmetic formulations at recommended concentrations.

While effective, formulators should be aware that high concentrations may lead to build-up on hair or cause irritation in sensitive individuals. It is often used in combination with other conditioning agents for optimal performance in hair and skin care products.
