BHA

Description

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), primarily represented by salicylic acid, is a key ingredient in skincare formulations targeting acne, clogged pores, and excess oil production. This oil-soluble exfoliant penetrates deep into pores, effectively dissolving sebum and cellular debris. BHA's keratolytic properties promote the shedding of dead skin cells, helping to unclog pores and prevent the formation of comedones. Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), BHA can function effectively at a higher pH, typically between 3 and 4, making it gentler on sensitive skin. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin, helping to reduce redness and combat acne-causing bacteria. BHA also exhibits photoprotective qualities, potentially enhancing the skin's defense against UV damage. Concentrations in over-the-counter products typically range from 0.5% to 2%, with higher concentrations available in professional treatments. While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience initial dryness or mild irritation. Regular use of BHA can lead to improved skin texture, reduced appearance of fine lines, and a more even skin tone.
