Beta Hydroxy Acid

Description

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), primarily represented by salicylic acid, is a lipid-soluble exfoliant widely used in skincare formulations. Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), BHAs can penetrate deep into pores, making them particularly effective for oily and acne-prone skin. This unique property allows BHAs to dissolve excess sebum and dislodge dead skin cells that can clog pores, potentially reducing the occurrence of acne and blackheads.

BHAs exhibit mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which can help soothe irritated skin and combat acne-causing bacteria. The exfoliating action of BHAs promotes cell turnover, leading to improved skin texture and a more even skin tone. Typically used in concentrations between 0.5% to 2%, BHAs are generally well-tolerated by most skin types.

While primarily known for their benefits in treating acne, BHAs also show promise in addressing photoaging and hyperpigmentation. However, they may increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation, necessitating the use of sunscreen during treatment. Some individuals may experience initial dryness or mild irritation when incorporating BHAs into their skincare routine, but these effects often subside with continued use.
