Bergamot Oil

Description

Bergamot oil, derived from the peel of the Citrus bergamia fruit, is a versatile essential oil with notable applications in skincare and aromatherapy. This light citrusy oil contains compounds such as limonene, linalool, and linalyl acetate, which contribute to its characteristic scent and potential skin benefits. Bergamot oil exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable ingredient in formulations targeting acne-prone skin and minor skin irritations.

However, bergamot oil contains bergapten, a photosensitizing compound that can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation. For this reason, bergamot oil should be used cautiously in leave-on products, particularly those intended for daytime use. Manufacturers often use bergapten-free or furocoumarin-free versions to mitigate this risk.

In skincare formulations, bergamot oil is typically used at concentrations between 0.1% to 1%, depending on the product type and intended use. It can help balance sebum production, potentially benefiting oily skin types. The oil's aromatic properties may also provide mood-enhancing effects, making it a popular choice in stress-relieving and relaxation-focused skincare products. As with all essential oils, patch testing is recommended before widespread use to check for individual sensitivities.
