Description

Benzylparaben is a synthetic preservative commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. This ingredient belongs to the paraben family, known for its antimicrobial properties that effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. Benzylparaben is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria and some molds.

The chemical structure of benzylparaben consists of a benzyl group attached to a para-hydroxybenzoic acid molecule. This configuration allows it to maintain product stability and extend shelf life by preventing microbial contamination. Benzylparaben is typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.3% in various formulations.

While effective as a preservative, benzylparaben has faced scrutiny due to concerns about potential endocrine disruption. However, regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety have deemed it safe for use within specified limits. It is less commonly used than other parabens like methylparaben or propylparaben.

Benzylparaben is oil-soluble, making it suitable for use in emulsions, lotions, and oil-based products. It functions optimally in a pH range of 4-8 and can be used in conjunction with other preservatives for broader antimicrobial coverage.
