BENZYL SALICYLATE

Description

Benzyl salicylate is a versatile organic compound widely used in both skincare and fragrance formulations. This ester, derived from salicylic acid and benzyl alcohol, possesses a mild, sweet floral scent reminiscent of carnations. In skincare, benzyl salicylate serves multiple functions, primarily as a UV absorber and fragrance fixative.

As a UV absorber, it helps protect the skin from harmful UVB rays, contributing to product stability and offering some photoprotection. Its ability to absorb UV light also makes it useful in preserving the integrity of other light-sensitive ingredients in formulations. In fragrances, benzyl salicylate acts as a fixative, enhancing the longevity of scents on the skin.

However, benzyl salicylate is known to be a potential skin sensitizer and allergen for some individuals. It's one of the 26 fragrance ingredients required to be listed on product labels in the European Union due to its allergenic potential. Formulators typically use concentrations between 0.1% to 5%, depending on the product type and intended function. Despite its benefits, caution is advised for those with sensitive skin or known fragrance allergies.
