BASIC VIOLET 4

Description

Basic Violet 4, also known as CI 42600, is a synthetic cationic dye commonly used in haircare products, particularly in purple shampoos and conditioners. This vibrant violet colorant is prized for its ability to neutralize unwanted yellow and brassy tones in blonde, gray, and white hair. Its molecular structure allows it to adhere effectively to hair fibers, providing temporary color correction without permanent staining.

In formulations, Basic Violet 4 is typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.001% to 0.1%, depending on the desired intensity of the toning effect. This ingredient works by depositing a thin layer of purple pigment on the hair shaft, which optically cancels out yellow hues. It is most effective on porous hair types and may require repeated applications for optimal results.

While generally considered safe for cosmetic use, Basic Violet 4 can cause temporary staining of the skin and nails if not rinsed thoroughly. Some individuals may experience scalp irritation or allergic reactions, necessitating patch testing before use. Formulators should be aware of regulatory limitations on its concentration in different regions to ensure product compliance and safety.
