Barium Sulfate

Description

Barium sulfate is a naturally occurring mineral compound with the chemical formula BaSO4. In skincare and cosmetic applications, it serves primarily as an inert filler and opacifying agent. This white, odorless, fine powder is prized for its ability to increase the opacity and whiteness of formulations without causing irritation or interacting chemically with other ingredients.

Due to its high molecular weight and insolubility in water and oils, barium sulfate remains on the skin's surface, making it an effective ingredient in sunscreens and color cosmetics. It helps to scatter and reflect light, which can contribute to a smoother appearance of the skin and a reduction in the visibility of fine lines and imperfections.

Barium sulfate is generally considered safe for topical use, as it does not penetrate the skin or get absorbed into the bloodstream. Its inert nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin types. In addition to its cosmetic applications, barium sulfate is widely used in medical imaging as a contrast agent for X-rays and CT scans.

When formulating with barium sulfate, it's important to ensure proper dispersion to avoid clumping and maintain a smooth texture in the final product.
