Avobenzone
Description
Avobenzone is a crucial organic compound widely used in sunscreens and other skincare products as a highly effective UVA filter. This oil-soluble ingredient, chemically known as butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, belongs to the dibenzoylmethane class of UV absorbers. Avobenzone provides broad-spectrum protection against UVA rays, which are responsible for premature skin aging and contribute to skin cancer risk.
The molecular structure of avobenzone allows it to absorb UV radiation across a wide range (310-400 nm), with peak absorption at 360 nm. This makes it particularly effective against UVA1 rays (340-400 nm), which penetrate deeper into the skin than UVA2 rays. Avobenzone is often combined with other UV filters to enhance overall sun protection and improve photostability.
While highly effective, avobenzone can be prone to degradation when exposed to sunlight, potentially reducing its protective capabilities over time. To mitigate this, formulators often pair it with photostabilizers like octocrylene or add antioxidants to the formulation. Avobenzone is approved for use in sunscreens by regulatory bodies worldwide, including the FDA and EMA, at concentrations up to 3% in most formulations.
