AVENANTHRAMIDES
Description
Avenanthramides are a unique class of polyphenols found exclusively in oats. These bioactive compounds have gained significant attention in the skincare industry due to their potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. First discovered in the 1980s, avenanthramides have since been extensively studied for their beneficial effects on skin health.
These molecules are composed of anthranilic acid and hydroxycinnamic acids, with over 25 different types identified. The most abundant and well-researched forms are avenanthramide A, B, and C. Their molecular structure allows them to penetrate the skin effectively, making them valuable ingredients in topical formulations.
Avenanthramides have been shown to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce skin redness and itching. They also protect against UV-induced oxidative stress and may help prevent premature skin aging. Clinical studies have demonstrated their efficacy in improving skin barrier function, reducing transepidermal water loss, and alleviating symptoms of various skin conditions, including eczema and atopic dermatitis.
In skincare products, avenanthramides are typically sourced from oat extracts and can be found in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 1%. Their stability and compatibility with other ingredients make them versatile for use in various formulations, including serums, moisturizers, and soothing treatments.
