AMMONIUM LAURYL SULFATE

Description

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) is a widely used surfactant in personal care and cosmetic products, particularly in cleansers and shampoos. This anionic surfactant is derived from lauryl alcohol and is known for its excellent foaming and cleansing properties. ALS effectively removes dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin and hair by reducing surface tension between water and oils.

While similar to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), ALS is generally considered milder and less likely to cause irritation in sensitive individuals. It has a pH between 6 and 7, making it compatible with the skin's natural acidity. ALS is water-soluble and biodegradable, contributing to its environmental friendliness.

In skincare formulations, ALS is typically used at concentrations between 1% and 5%. It works synergistically with other surfactants to enhance cleansing efficacy and foam stability. Despite its benefits, some individuals may experience dryness or irritation with prolonged use, particularly those with very sensitive skin or certain skin conditions. As with any surfactant, it's essential to rinse thoroughly after use and follow with appropriate moisturizers to maintain skin hydration and barrier function.
