Ammonium Laureth Sulfate

Description

Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES) is a widely used surfactant in personal care and cosmetic products. This synthetic ingredient is derived from lauryl alcohol, which is typically sourced from coconut or palm kernel oil. ALES belongs to the alkyl ether sulfate family and is known for its excellent foaming and cleansing properties.

In skincare and haircare formulations, ALES functions as a primary surfactant, effectively removing dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin and hair. It produces a rich, stable lather and is generally milder than its counterpart, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). The ethoxylation process in ALES production results in a larger molecule, reducing potential skin irritation.

ALES is water-soluble and works well in a wide pH range, making it versatile for various product types. It's commonly found in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, and liquid hand soaps. While effective at cleansing, ALES can potentially strip natural oils from the skin and hair if used in high concentrations. Formulators often combine it with milder co-surfactants or moisturizing agents to balance its cleansing power with skin-friendly attributes.
