Description

Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES) is a widely used anionic surfactant in personal care and cosmetic products. This synthetic ingredient is derived from lauryl alcohol, which undergoes ethoxylation and sulfation processes before being neutralized with ammonium hydroxide. ALES is known for its excellent foaming and cleansing properties, making it a popular choice in shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers.

The chemical structure of ALES allows it to effectively remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin and hair. It is generally milder than its counterpart, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), due to the ethoxylation process, which reduces potential skin irritation. ALES has a pH range of 6.0-8.0, making it compatible with most skin types.

While ALES is effective at cleansing, it may still cause dryness or irritation in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin. It is important to note that ALES can penetrate the skin barrier, potentially leading to increased transepidermal water loss. As with any surfactant, prolonged exposure or high concentrations may disrupt the skin's natural lipid barrier.
